How it’s calculated
Wall area is the room’s perimeter times the wall height. Each door takes off about 20 sq ft and each window about 15 sq ft.
Paint needed is area times coats, divided by the coverage on the can (350 to 400 sq ft per gallon for most interior paint). The result is rounded up to the nearest quart.
Two coats is the norm, especially over a different color. Rough or porous surfaces soak up more; use the lower coverage figure for those.
