How it’s calculated
Volume is length times width times depth (inches divided by 12). Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards.
Bags are rounded up to whole bags. Common sizes are 0.75, 1, 1.5 and 2 cubic feet; the size is on the bag.
Soil settles once it’s watered, so buy about 10% more than the volume, especially for raised beds.
